Management & Leadership Development
The essential things to have at hand which make managing people so much easier.
Gardeners know what tools to use and how to use them. They look after their tools, keep them clean and sharp and have them to hand ready for when they are needed. These tools are like your key management skills and how you apply this knowledge in your role.
Some tools are best kept in the shed as they are only used once in a while. But the most useful and valuable tools are kept nearby or even carried around the garden. Think of these tools as the most essential ones to have on your gardening / management tool belt.
These tools help build and maintain rapport and assist in managing the performance of your people.
The Questioning Tool
The Listening Tool
The Feedback Tool
The Mentoring / Coaching Tool
The tools could be used in 1:1’s, team briefs, on the phone and even email etc.
To be able to use these essential tools efficiently, without really thinking about it, takes practice and it can take lots of practice to be fully competent in using them. Even if you are already very confident in your tool handling technique there is usually some more room for improvement.
What other garden tools are there and how can they be linked to the tools and skills required to manage your plants?
What tool does your boss like to use the most?
More details on the essential management tools can be found in Jason's book - I Can Grow People.
